GSG Recommended 2015

The Spa at Stanley House earned a glowing review from the Good Spa Guide in 2015, winning a 5-bubble Spa rating from their ‘Spa Spies’. Please read the highlights of their review below:

First impressions

The spa has been cleverly designed as an extension of the hotel and in keeping with its surroundings. The décor of rich, dark wood is lifted by the amount of daylight that pours through the windows. So much has been fitted into the space.

The changing area has five private changing rooms which all have a large shower, changing space and vanity table. The changing rooms have Ila amenities, a robe, towel and slippers.

Use of the thermal area is included in some spa packages, or there may be an additional charge. Only eight guests are allowed in the thermal suite at any one time so it never becomes crowded. You can enjoy six heat experiences, with temperatures for all tastes.

We started our journey with an experience shower, followed by the dark marble steam room. The salt infusion room offers a medium temperature and you can control the salt release by pressing a button. The hot sauna was by far our favourite; the room is large and looks out over the lake. The ice fountain will help you cool down afterwards.

The hydrotherapy pool is a lovely temperature and wide enough to stretch into a breast stroke or two. The swan pipes are perfect for loosening the knots in your shoulders. There is also a lounger to lie on, and a walk-in experience where the jets surround you. From the four heated loungers by the hydrotherapy pool, you can look through the floor-to-ceiling windows and spot wildlife enjoying the grounds.

Help yourself to nibbles, fruit and drinks as you relax pre- or post-treatment while enjoying the view. The chairs and sofas are arranged so that solo spa guests, couples and small groups can be comfortable. In warmer weather, you can step onto the outside patio area and relax on a sun lounger. Bliss!

Tell us about the treatments

We had the Natura Bissé Taster Treatment (120 minutes, £130). My therapist, Georgie, met me in the relaxation room and escorted me to the treatment room. It was one of the largest I have seen, with a bath for bathing rituals as well as a shower and treatment bed. Georgie bathed my feet in warm water infused with rose oil. She exfoliated and dried my feet while finding out which areas I wanted her to concentrate on.

The treatment began with a full body exfoliation using a salt and oil scrub to polish away dead skin and aid the absorption of the Natura Bissé Vitamin C body cream used in the massage. Georgie delivered one of the best massages I have ever had. The massage combined stretching, long flowing and stroking movements with techniques to release tension. This felt superior to the massage norm, with the citrusy aroma of the Vitamin C body cream.

The facial that followed also used the Vitamin C range which was correct for my pigmented skin type. Georgie cleansed and exfoliated my skin and applied a gentle peel. Facial massage and scalp massage completed the treatment. The Natura Bissé taster is ideal for regular spa goers who want to experience something special and we thought it was worth every penny! The results were visible on my face and lasted for several days afterwards.

Food facts

Spa attendants serve food and drinks in the relaxation room. There is a small but adequate menu of salads and sandwiches as well as afternoon tea and sweet treats but no hot options. You can enjoy a glass of bubbles as you relax, too.

If you are staying, we recommend trying Stanley House Hotel’s restaurant the Grill on the Hill. The charming and discreet service there, coupled with the high standard of the local Lancashire produce, is not to be missed.

We loved / We didn’t love

We loved the location; the grounds are peaceful and the views are amazing.

The thermal suite has extensive facilities which you can enjoy while gazing at the wildlife.

The treatments are worth visiting for alone; the only difficulty is choosing what to have!

We also loved the customer service and personal approach throughout. Small touches such as product samples and a note from your therapist left outside your hotel room door make all the difference.

We didn’t love returning to the relaxation room after our treatment. We needed a quiet, dark space to relax after treatments that amazing.

Who do you think would like it?

Serious spa goers who want to be truly pampered.

Anyone looking for an intimate getaway for a night or two.

Foodies: The food in the spa is light and tasty, and the food in the restaurant is worth staying for.
